Inauguration 2009 the Web 2.0 Way
Inauguration 2009 the Web 2.0 Way A friend told me a touching story today about going shopping with his Mom on January 20, 1969, when he was 8 years old, and stopping by a local appliance store to catch Nixons inaugural address along with other people in the neighborhood. Today, 40 years later, he returned to the same location and watched Obamas inaugural address at the Circuit City, right across the street from that long gone appliance store. I think it has always been the case that people want to connect with other people during historic moments such as these and there were ample examples of people gathering today in Times Square and other hubs across the nation. My community of choice for this inaugural address was web-based. I jumped back and forth between Twitter, Twemes, Facebook, CNN, MSN, AOL, and The New York Times online while surfing the various television stations to check out how the event was playing out on the major stations. I was able to pick up on snippets of everyones online conversationsthe ho pes, the skepticism, the humorfrom people all over the world. It was a truely amazing experience. According to Mashable, 3,000 people commented on the Facebook CNN feed per minute and millions of people logged into Facebook during the broadcast. The experience reminded me once again of the breathtaking potential of all that is Web 2.0 and the incredible conversations that can occur online to bridge geography, culture, professions, industries, and social standing. The web really is a great equalizer and a great way to build community. And community is what you need to drive a strong career management strategy. Stay connected online and have meaningful conversations about topics you are knowledgeable and passionate about. The web is the 21st century global water cooler, barber shop, coffee shop, and appliance store all rolled into one. Make sure you are not left out of the conversation.

4 Types of Work Friends That Keep You Sane - Cubicle Chic
4 Types of Work Friends That Keep You Sane - Cubicle Chic 4 Types of Work Friends That Keep You Sane Corporate Life, Personal Development June 22, 2018 10 CommentsNo one knows better than Michael Scott about the importance of friendships! Friends joke with one another, right? (Maybe not so much about each otherâs financial situation and motherâs healthâ¦) What we do know is that humor is the penicillin for all bad situations.Itâs especially important for the workplace. Between delivering results, meeting goals, getting along with unpleasant coworkers (or even worse, bosses), we donât often leave a whole lot of mental energy to check on our sanity. Having the right kind of friends is the quickest way to maintain sanity in the work life. In todayâs post, we will talk about the 4 types of friends that help you stay happy and sane at work.Top Jeans: c/o of Dailylook Elite; Handbag: c/o Palla A-Handbag; use â@cubicle_chicâ for 15% off. Top Jeans: c/o of Dailylook Elite; Handbag: c/o Palla A-Handbag; use â@cubicle_chicâ for 15% off.4 types of friends that help you st ay happy and sane at work. The fellow victimWhatever hardship, whoever the villain, when you spend 8 hours a day, 5 days a week at any place, there will be times and people that make you wish you werenât there. Whether be it a last-minute project lands on your place because no one wanted to touch it, a grumpy co-worker that has no boundary and holds your ears hostage for conversations you do not wish to have, or a sadistic boss that has no respect for your timeâ¦these are times when it makes things so much better if someone else is suffering with you. Itâs not as much that the other person is also suffering, but that you arenât alone in dealing with this misfortune. You see, trying to explain whatâs going on at work to someone else, such as a significant other, a family member, or a close friend, is like trying to sing a song through humming â" it takes someone familiar with the issues to get it 100%. If you have a fellow coworker is going through the same exact issues as you are, a comradery automatically forms, and you have an instant alliance. That alone sometimes is the key to reducing perceived pain and difficulty caused by a particular work situation. The sarcastic bitchAlong the same line as having a fellow victim, you need a sarcastic friend who isnât afraid of being a bitch sometimes (towards your common enemy, not you). I should caveat this by saying that this has to be a sarcastic bitch who has a lot of empathy. This whole dynamic works based on her/his understanding of your situation and willingness (or natural tendency) to bitch at what/who is causing you pain at work. Simply put, this person is an active practitioner of empathy. We all know how venting works and itâs most effective when someone else is not only agreeing but chiming in. Itâs also proven in studies that empathy in the workplace makes us happier and more productive. The strategic mentorIf having the first two kinds of friends is how you deal with adverse situations pas sively, the strategic mentor is how you deal with the situations proactively. Once youâve vented and moved on from the heat of the moment, itâs time to think about how to prevent the situation from occurring again, or how to deal with it better next time. Sure, more likely than not, what is within your power to improve the situation may be minimal, but this is where a strategic mentor comes in. A strategic mentor is, hopefully, someone a bit more seasoned than you are in the workforce, knows you well, has your benefit at heart, and isnât afraid to tell you the truth. You need this person to analyze the situation for you with as little bias as possible. The best outcome in talking to a strategic mentor about an adverse situation at work is that you come out of it 1) feeling less bitter because you know youâre not at fault, or 2) feeling secure and comfortable in knowing how to prevent the situation again or how you need to improve in order to avoid such an event from happenin g again.Top Jeans: c/o of Dailylook Elite; Handbag: c/o Palla A-Handbag; use â@cubicle_chicâ for 15% off. Puppies, kittens, and good food are three of such things. Studies have shown that looking at puppies and kitten actually lowers blood pressure. If youâre a cat lover and you happen to have a coworker who is also a cat lover, the cat talk is so therapeutic on an otherwise busy and stressful workday. The occasional cute puppy/kitten GIFs that come through your email may have the same effects. Similarly, the ambiance of the entire office space can be lifted by a box of baked goods, a plate of lunch to be shared by the group or a bag of freshly harvested lemons from some oneâs backyard. Donât underestimate such little joys in life and the people that make them happen â" they are increasing the quality of your work life without your conscious awareness.Top Jeans: c/o of Dailylook Elite; Handbag: c/o Palla A-Handbag; use â@cubicle_chicâ for 15% off.ConclusionThere you have it. The four kinds of friends at work that will keep you sane and make your work life better. If you already have these four friends, congratulations! Get them a nice token of appreciation when the next holiday comes around. If you donât have these four friends, itâs time to start paying attention. I suggest trailing the smell of donuts next time you sense them at work. Find out who brought them, and chat up that person! All photography by Natalie Alvarado @ Stylenufse

Its Ok to Quit - Hallie Crawford
Itâs Ok to Quit I canât tell you how many times Iâve gotten on the phone with a career coaching client and they sound great. And a few seconds later as weâre into the call, they tell me they got laid off or quit. The first few times this happened I was surprised because typically of course, this is not good news. But in some cases, when the job is making them miserable they are more relieved than anything else and actually incredibly happy that the experience is over! This is of course when the client is financially stable and has some way to pay their bills at least for the short term. But even without that cushion honestly, many of them are still happy. So we want you to know that itâs ok to quit. You have permission. My rule of thumb is (one of them) if your job is making you physically ill you need to make a change asap. If you are in an abusive situation in any way or you witness unethical behavior-thatâs another good reason of course. But itâs also ok if your current job is preven ting you from moving towards your dream job, because itâs sucking the life out of you. This client story may help you consider your situation further and decide what to do. Of course, donât do something without thinking it through fully and having a plan. But know that, itâs ok to move on even if it doesnât seem like the most practical thing to do. You know the saying, when a door closesâ¦. a window opensâ¦. Here it is from Sally in Minnesota. Notice she talks about trying to like the job and fit herself into it. Itâs better to find a job that fits rather than force yourself into one that doesnât. âI finally quit my job in June and have not at all regretted that decision. I tried for so long to like my position there, but it was really just paper-pushing and bureaucracy, and I feel like I have more to give to this world. So for no solid reason, I just left. No job to go to, no graduate school waiting. I just quit. I have spent my summer living up north with some of my favorite people in the world, doing all sorts of relaxing things sewing, reading, cooking, and watching camp fires. This was a much needed pause for me. I am now back in Minneapolis for a few days before I head out to Seattle to spend some time with my best friend. Mostly I just need to really get away and experience another place and EXPLORE. I am just now beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel.â She sees this light at the end of the tunnel in part because she left a job that was weighing her down. If you are this unhappy in your position do something, whether itâs quit or something else. Donât stay where it doesnât work for you. Take one action step this week, however small, towards moving on We hope this is helpful to you! The career coaches at HallieCrawford.com.
