Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Are You Coachable? Take the Test and Find Out I’ve been having some “issues” with my golf game. A friend recommended I visit Golf Tec. I went to the one in Plano, Texas and had my “Swing evaluation.” During the hour, the golf professional asked me to tell him my goal. (For those of you I coach does that sound familiar?) I told him I wanted to reduce my handicap from a 19 to a 12. That’s pretty ambitious, since I never played to a 12 even when I was in top physical condition prior to….surgeries. Having watched myself on video in the first session, I can see why I have a 19 handicap. Can I get to a 12? It will depend on whether I am coachable and willing to make the effort between coaching sessions. (For those of you I coach, does that also sound familiar?) Since I began coaching lawyers in 2005 I have found that some lawyers really put a lot into the coaching program and they get a lot out of it. One lawyer I coached in 2006-07 when he was an associate sent me an email in January, announcing he had a record year in 2015, originating over $3 million in business. I knew when I coached him, he would be a rainmaker and now he certainly is. Over time, I have developed Coachability Factors. I urge you to take the test and see if you are coachable.   I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

How to get employers to target you on social media - Debut

The most effective method to get managers to target you via web-based networking media - Debut This article is composed by outside donor, Jem Collins. She is a computerized columnist and editorial manager who centers around human rights and vocations. She's the establishing executive of Journo Resources, a non-benefit which assists individuals with getting into the media business, and the key effect chief of RightsInfo. You can likewise follow her on Twitter, she'd that way. Until a week ago I'd never at any point known about the term 'war for ability'. I have, be that as it may, went after a great deal of positions. Some I have interviews for, some I haven't, and here and there I even secured the gig â€" however connecting them all there's constantly been a solid inclination of rivalry; a feeling of hundreds, if not thousands, of graduates going after similar positions. Also, it's a sense supported up measurements â€" on normal there are 75 people applying for every opening, except in certain divisions (and for the most esteemed bosses) this can be a whole lot higher. A year ago very nearly 50,000 individuals applied to PwC's alumni, student and school leaver positions, every one of them vieing for only 2,285 employments. It's a comparable story for those attempting to get a law preparing contract, with only 5,000 places yearly, yet an expected 17,500 law understudies as detailed by The Guardian. This may appear at chances with the thought of the 'war for ability', a term regularly tossed around by those working in enlistment and first authored in a 1997 book about the organization's employing rehearses. The fundamental thought is that discovering, enrolling, and keeping as well as can be expected 'represent the deciding moment' firms, driving them to a regularly expanding want to locate the absolute best individuals. New examination from The Knowledge Academy likewise recommends bosses are searching for better approaches to contact the best individuals. Not exclusively is work at top firms set to ascend by 3.6 percent this year, yet internet based life publicizing is rapidly turning into the most well known method of arriving at new ability. 97 percent of organizations reviewed said they were utilizing web based life to arrive at up-and-comers, and 63 percent said they were accomplishing like never before previously. Things being what they are, if there is expanding rivalry, however businesses are searching for the best ability via web-based networking media, how would you ensure they're focusing on you? Seeing how businesses utilize online life is urgent Getting managers to come to you may seem like a fantasy situation â€" however it's really not that implausible. Scouts spend a large portion of their lives on LinkedIn, says Kate Allen, the overseeing chief of Allen Associates, which has been setting individuals in graduate employments for a long time. The test is to be the individual she and her group find â€" regardless of whether that is through them looking physically for imminent applicants, or ticking the privilege boxes to get a focused on advertisement. It may seem like a great deal to consider, yet a couple of changes go far. An ever increasing number of businesses are creeping over online networking as a component of their pre-screening, Kate proceeds. They're expecting individuals who are entering the activity market to have pondered their LinkedIn profile, and to have upgraded it. Again, it returns to ensuring individuals can discover you â€" and that they like what they find. And afterward there's the tech side of things. Web based life locales themselves have refined calculations intended to give you a greater amount of what you're keen on and appropriate for, just as offering managers simple approaches to focus on the correct individuals through promoting. We have seen a critical move in the apparatuses potential candidates use to secure positions, says Jennie Wiseman, a senior resourcing chief at bookkeeping and business warning firm BDO. Thus online life has become a basic part of their enlistment methodology, with the group putting resources into both publicizing and supported posts, which can be very focused on. It's practically similar to SEO for internet based life Be that as it may, what does this really mean for your online profile? Indeed, concurring Kelly Grainger, the organizer of vocation exhortation administration Hudia, truly essential things can have a significant effect. What I attempt to do is say here's an agenda and here are the things you have to get right. It's straightforward things that really help you. Pushing ahead only each percent in turn, all these easily overlooked details include, he clarifies. A portion of those things are entirely simple â€" having a decent profile picture, and rounding out all the segments you can. As per LinkedIn's own guide for understudies, individuals with a school labeled in their profile get multiple times a larger number of perspectives than individuals that don't, those with abilities labeled get multiple times more individuals taking a gander at them, and one out of five recruiting chiefs state they've chosen up-and-comers on account of their volunteer understanding. Essentially, those individuals filled in all the containers. Both when enrollment specialists are scanning for you and when organizations are paying to promote, it's tied in with deduction what the key attributes they're searching for are â€" and the sort of foundation that individual has. For instance, in case you're hoping to work in showcasing, ensure your LinkedIn heading makes reference to promoting. Consider the key aptitudes required for the part you need to go into and litter your profile with them. Investigate bosses in your field and perceive how they sell themselves â€" at that point ensure your profile mirrors their qualities. It's practically similar to SEO, says Kelly, referencing the procedure by which sites make their pages progressively findable. On the off chance that you think from an occupation searchers perspective, you are placing catchphrases in to get a new line of work. On the off chance that that business hasn't put the significant title for the job of a portion of the catchphrases you probably won't run over that activity yourself. Flip that thought backward, and not utilizing the watchwords utilized inside an alumni expected set of responsibilities may mean individuals can't discover you. Be that as it may, similarly as with everything, ensure you make some parity. Nobody needs to peruse something that is basically only a rundown of trendy expressions, so take as much time as necessary to create nitty gritty depictions of the effect you've made by what you do. LinkedIn themselves express their key contrast to a CV is the chance to advance your own character and clarify your jobs in more prominent detail, including that 56 percent of businesses don't think understudies depict their activity jobs in enough detail on the web. Without a doubt, I may once in a while get paid to sit in workplaces and tweet throughout the day (indeed, that truly is as extraordinary as it sounds), however businesses will be considerably more inspired by the amount I've driven up the traffic and commitment, just as certain instances of my best Twitter work. Round everything out. Truly, everything Internet based life focusing on offers businesses an extraordinarily itemized approach to contact individuals â€" so it pays to both stay up with the latest and centered. When in doubt, if there's a container, fill it. Facebook, for instance, permits promoters to target dependent on things like your age, the school you went to, the region you live in, stuff you've taken a gander at or the individuals you follow. The more data you pour in, the more advanced it gets. In this way, regardless of whether you have bolted off your Facebook and closed down the security settings (which, let's be honest, is most likely shrewd), you can at present be presented extremely applicable promotions by ensuring you've recorded your college, places you've worked, and are following key organizations in the segment. Frankly, this causes me to feel somewhat better about the reality my Facebook page is a cemetery of wherever I've at any point worked since I was 15. Regardless of whether you're not following each organization that works in pharmaceuticals (to be very legit, that course of events would be dull), organizations will regularly publicize to individuals who like their rivals pages. Fundamentally, a little exertion goes far. A similar ethos works over all the key systems. Ensure you've turned on the profession intrigues tab on LinkedIn to show you're open for offers, and have rounded out all the enterprises you're keen on working for and the kind of occupation titles you're exploring. Utilize local employment advert frameworks as a need when you search through LinkedIn it will keep a tab of the jobs you're keen on and apply to, so there's progressively chance you'll be demonstrated business as usual. You have them on the page presently to keep them there You have them on your page, presently the undertaking is to keep them there. It takes something like 12 seconds for an accomplished selection representative to filter your CV and your LinkedIn profile, cautions Kate. So you truly should ensure you have everything looking most excellent and that you are by and large extremely brief. There's a little fateful opening to catch that employing chief's eye, concurs Kelly. Having an area at the top which pulls out your key aptitudes, actually shot pointed, implies I see straight away 'incredible they have this ability, this expertise and this aptitude, those are three things I requirement for this activity.' They're presently worth getting for a meeting and burrowing somewhat more profound. He features Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter as the vital three for work searchers, saying the key inquiry is around consistency. Is the message and your profile the equivalent over each of the three? he inquires. This may sound extremely essential, yet having a great profile picture, since this needs to depict the correct picture about what your identity is and what you do, ensuring you're featuring the entirety of your accomplishments and aptitudes, and â€" like your CV â€" it must be applicable and locks in. In any case, it's likewise worth remembering the all inclusive nature of web based life you may be applying to three distinct employments in three unique areas, however they'll all be seeing the equivalent LinkedIn or Twitter page. Many individuals utilize the short profiles at the head of LinkedIn, and that is all generally excellent, yet it should be sufficiently conventional, clarifies Kate. While it's imperative to maintain a concentration and a personali

As I would like to think, pretend is only that â€" play, or playing a game. Commonly, salesmen look for the best approach to win endorsement, a deal, or the game. As needs be, they attempt to detail their content as indicated by what the educator or Manager accepts to be the best. This sort of preparing is definitely not veritable. Whatever am I alluding? The following is an ideal case of what as of late occurred in a corporate office as handed-off by a displeased friend. The administrator trained his group of deals experts to present themselves as though they were going to a capacity and were posed the inquiry, What do you do? The master plan of their organization was to be reported first, trailed by a brief and significant level review of what they sell. It wasnt the activity itself, however the way wherein every business proficient moved toward the activity that is captivating. By perusing the situations beneath, you will rapidly see that pretend transforms into a game among those requested to play. Those included divert into youngsters looking for endorsement from the educator. #1. Clara guaranteed she stirred early in the morning to rehearse for two or three hours, looking for endorsement toward the beginning. She claimed her introductory statements thus she sounded common and the Manager was satisfied. Her objective was accomplished. #2. Employers and work visas what are you really thinking University of Manchester Careers Blog

Employers and work visas what are you really thinking by Amanda (International) It was the Graduate Fairs last week, with over 100 employers on our campus looking to hire graduate  talent. To reflect our international profile of students, over the two days we made a point of exploring with a number of the exhibitors whether  they were able and / or willing to hire international applicants. There were mixed responses as you would expect. These ranged from I am not on the Register or our starting salaries are too low (which is expected)  to Yes, we are happy to sponsor if we meet the right applicant (good news!) However, there was also a mix of employers who were not necessarily familiar with the latest legislation and felt they could not sponsor, or simply did not sponosr as company policy. My colleague and I did our best to help some of the organisations get a better sense of the latest regulations (no-one tells employers) , and put them in touch with immigration support where needed   so lets hope that it has enabled some of our international students to progress UK opportunities and offer their talent. However, it also got us thinking about how employers come across online and how that can be confusing and  is interpreted by our international students. Employers often have a statement on their website about diversity and welcoming talent, but often there is a lack of clarity about whether they are willing to sponsor. Some statements are interpreted in different ways too. To help us to guide employers better, therefore, we have decided to ask you what you think (and interpret) from employers standpoints. If you could spare 2 minutes to complete our poll, we will share our findings with you on this blog. We will also include a summary of the employer perspectives we gained at the fair. We will also be sharing this with recruiters. POLL: Take Our Poll All International employers international students

Do Jobseekers Prefer Job Boards to LinkedIn and Google A new study from  Millennial Branding and Beyond.com looks at how Baby Boomers, Generation X Y use social media and other tools for their job search. 5,268 job seekers were surveyed total, including 742 Gen Y (18-29 year olds), 1,676 Gen X (30-47) and 2,850 Baby Boomers (48-67). Highlights: All generations are spending almost all of their time job searching online instead of offline, spending between 5 and 20 hours per week searching and still favor job boards  as their top resource. Gen Y is more optimistic about finding a job, values workplace flexibility and intends to go back to school instead of continuing their search over older generations. Gen X values job security and has suffered more stress and frustration due to unemployment relative to others. More Boomers use social networks in their job search over Gen X and Gen Y and they turn to LinkedIn first, while the other generations turn to Google/Google+. The most surprising statistic was that Boomers are using the internet as well as social networks more in their job search than younger generations, says Dan Schawbel of Millennial Branding. Since Boomers are out of work longer and understand the fundamentals of networking, they are going to LinkedIn in order to find new opportunities. Be Kind to Yourself

Be Kind to Yourself Most of us were raised believing that being kind to others is important. Are you kind to yourself too? Being kind to yourself doesn’t mean spending lots of money on new shoes or fancy jewelry though if you can afford it, be my guest. I love a pair of fancy shoes as much as the next woman! Being kind to yourself is about doing the little things that make you feel strong and composed  in the long run. Time to Relax Whether it’s hot baths, curling up with a good book, or going for a long run, make time for whatever it takes for you to really relax. Down time lets your brain recover from the rest of your busy life, anchor new learnings and think about challenges in a new way. It also helps your body to let go of stress, whether mental stress from a tough day, or physical stress from hunching your shoulders in front of the computer. Delicious, Healthy Food Good food doesn’t have to mean expensive organics or huge slabs of beef. It means fueling your body’s engine with nutritious food that tastes good. Eat your fresh vegetables, get a variety of textures and flavors into your meals. Try different recipes. Even novice cooks can find great recipes online. I love many of Jamie Oliver’s short-time meals and Donna Hay’s recipes. Eat when you’re hungry, savor every bite, and stop when youre full. Have that occasional treat â€" ice cream, chocolate, cheese, whatever gives you that little ‘yum rush.’ It’s about pleasure, not dieting. Sleep A good night’s sleep is the foundation of your day. Get enough (it’s more than you think), and do it in a comfortable bedroom. Soft sheets, soft pjs, a regular bedtime and wakeup time, a nap if you need one. These are the stuff of rest. Far better than burning the midnight oil and crashing on the weekend. You’ll never make it up, and you’ll have tired skin and bags under your  eyes. Friendship Make room for good times with friends and family. Do whatever brings you together: talking, short trips, a walk in the park, working in the garden, seeing movies. Laughter and friendship are good for your health. Fill your memories with good times that you can go back to when you need a smile. I remember helping friends move house, parties, ski days, weekend getaways and baking experiments that didn’t always work out. When I need a smile, there’s always something good to remember! Give Yourself a Break We’re always very quick to see our own failures: the task that wasn’t finished on time, the plants that died, the meal that wasn’t perfect. Relax! Life happens. Put it in context: if it won’t be important in 5 years, why waste 5 minutes being upset about it now? Life’s minor ‘disasters’ can lead to great memories too: have you ever discovered a beautiful setting or delicious restaurant after getting lost?    Embrace these adventures, and take it easy on yourself when things don’t go exactly as planned. Simple pleasures are still among the best: easy, inexpensive, and fulfilling. They help you escape life’s hamster wheel of ‘must do’s’. So call your friend and take a walk this evening, have a long bath tomorrow, literally stop and smell the flowers (or the cupcakes). Be kind to yourself! . Main image credit.

Hes not one of my clients or a business associate in any way.Mike Podestos Reviews on FindMyProfession.comMike has attacked/tried to divert business from U.S., Canadian, Australian, Asian, and European resume writing services and resume writers. His actions include:Inaccurate, negative descriptions of resume writing services.Fake one-star reviews of companies he regards as competitors.Libelous accusations regarding those companies.Fake five-star reviews of his own company on Trustpilot and other third-party review sites.Responses to Mikes BehaviorIn 2019, the Better Business Bureau asked Mike to substantiate or remove his claims from his website and other locations. They t hen censured him when he didnt take action. As a result, he has now:Removed some of his fake reviews from third-party sites.Added a link to an advertising disclosure on some of the reviews on his website, findmyprofession.com. However, he doesnt disclose hs egregious conflicts of interest on the face of his reviews.Beyond the BBB, as different organizations have become aware of his behavior, they have restricted his ability to post on their sites. Mike now appears to be mostly constrained to posting his attacks on competitors to his website, findmyprofession.com.In addition, in April 2019, one of the subjects of Mikes harassment filed suit against him. The federal court proceeding alleged libel, libel per se, deceptive or unfair conduct, and material misrepresentation. During the course of the suit, which appears to have been settled via mediation, he admitted to many of the allegations. The 10 Best Resume Writers Mike Podestos findmyprofession.com website currently contains reviews of the 10 best resume writers in multiple cities and regions:Allentown, Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Bridgeport, Buffalo, Calgary, Charleston, Charlotte, Chicago, Colorado Springs, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Edmonton, El Paso, Ft. Worth, Grand Rapids, Hartford, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Louisville, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Montreal, Nashville, New Orleans, New York City, Orlando, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, Providence, Richmond, Sacramento, St. Louis,   Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Silicon Valley, Tampa, Toronto, Tucson, Vancouver, Ventura, Virginia Beach, Washington, D.C., and Winnipeg.Mike doesnt appear to have hired any of the reviewed resume writers, yet he publishes negative, frequently inaccurate information about working with them.Beyond that, he rates his company, which he runs from home in a Denver suburb, as the #1 resume writing company in each of t he cities listed above. The 10 Best Resume Writing Services in AmericaIn addition, he has rated his company as the best resume writing service in all of America and several large states. You can see these articles on findmyprofession.com:10 Best Resume Writers in America10 Best Resume Writing Services in CaliforniaThe Best Resume Writing Services in TexasThe Best Resume Writing Services in Florida10 Best Resume Writing Services in OhioThe 10 Best Resume Writers in India Australia + ParisYes, you read that correctly. He ranks his company as the best resume writer in India. As the crow flies, its 7,700 miles from Denver to Dehli. Moreover, he rates his company, mostly an ever-changing mix of outsourced, contract writers, as the best resume writer in Australia. Denver to Sydney is 8,325 miles. He also recently started touting his company as the best resume writer in Paris [insert Gallic shrug].The 10 Best Executive Resume WritersBeyond his geographic claims, Mike has also written posts n aming his company the best executive resume writing service. He followed that with multiple posts claiming to be the best C-level resume writer, the best CEO resume writer, and the best CXO (fill in the X) resume writer. The Best Way to Find a Resume WriterIf you want to find the best resume writer for you, Ive written a guide that walks you through how to do it. I describe two approaches, one easy and one that requires a little more effort, to find a resume writer who will meet your unique needs.I dont recommend specific companies or writers because I dont have the information about you I would need to make a helpful referral. The Best Career CoachForging new ground, in March 2019 Mike started proclaiming his company the best career coach in several cities. None of the people on his LinkedIn employee list have coaching certifications. The 10 Best Executive Search FirmsMike has also declared his company, a B2C job search company, the best executive recruiting firm in America.Youre bett er off relying on Hunt Scanlon, the leading executive search media outlet, for that opinion. I like their independent, authoritatively researched list of the Top 50 Recruiters.Unsurprisingly, theres no mention of Mikes company and no link to findmyprofession.com on Hunt Scanlons list. Will Mike Podestos Reviews Continue to Expand? Will Mike continue to write reviews on findmyprofession.com that claim hes the best resume writer,   best career coach, and best executive recruiter in cities and countries around the world?I hope not. Those are deceptive reviews designed to game the Google algorithm.   They divert traffic looking for a geographically or functionally specialized resume writer or coach and executive recruiters to a 27-year-old who cant, by his admission, find a good job for himself. That person is a few years out of Fresno State and spent less than a year recruiting junior software developers before proclaiming himself a career expert. The Benefits of Being Trolled by Mike Pode stoRegardless of what becomes of Mike and his marketing practices, I have found a bright side to being trolled. Ive:Learned a lot about white hat (OK with Google) and black hat (not OK with Google ) search engine optimization techniques.Been motivated to fine-tune my blog and its SEO, in a Google-approved way, to make it more effective.Confirmed I have many friends in the careers community and made some new ones.Good Luck? Bad Luck? Who Knows?Being trolled turns out to be like the old farmer story, Good luck? Bad Luck? Who knows? If you would like to see valid, verifiable reviews of my executive resume writing service, written by my clients, please click here or visit my LinkedIn profile.

Creating Resume for a Job Search

Creating Resume for a Job SearchCreating resume is important, but doing the wrong thing will get you nowhere. So make sure that you have a thorough understanding of the different ways you can create a resume to give yourself the best opportunity for employment. Here are some things you should look for.Firstly, always try to put emphasis on the most important aspects of your resume. Try to keep your resume very professional, but simple, and organize. Just make sure that it is clear and concise. The most important things in a resume are your contact details, education and experience. You can put them as bullet points in your resume. Do not repeat them. Try to break them down into sections and list them in order of importance. The next step to consider is your color scheme. Make sure you choose a style that matches your environment. It could be either monochromatic or colored.Your header and the list of your work are vital too. Your resume needs to be short and to the point but still info rmative and eye-catching. It is better to have two bullet points than one.Try to avoid using all caps in your resume. Your resume should be easy to read and easy to follow. Use words that will make your resume easily understandable. That is why using all caps is something you should avoid. You also need to consider the most important elements of your resume: job history and qualifications. Always highlight these. Also, make sure that your resume is easy to read and searchable. Try to make your resume like a book that anyone can read and understand easily. You can continue to make your resume more professional, but it is important that you do some things that are professional as well. Also, avoid putting your social security number on your resume. Finally, there are some great software applications for creating resumes that are user friendly and effective.

Inauguration 2009 the Web 2.0 Way

Inauguration 2009 the Web 2.0 Way A friend told me a touching story today about going shopping with his Mom on January 20, 1969, when he was 8 years old, and stopping by a local appliance store to catch Nixons inaugural address along with other people in the neighborhood. Today, 40 years later, he returned to the same location and watched Obamas inaugural address at the Circuit City, right across the street from that long gone appliance store. I think it has always been the case that people want to connect with other people during historic moments such as these and there were ample examples of people gathering today in Times Square and other hubs across the nation. My community of choice for this inaugural address was web-based. I jumped back and forth between  Twitter,  Twemes,  Facebook,  CNN, MSN, AOL, and The New York Times online while surfing the various television stations to check out how the event was playing out on the major stations. I was able to pick up on snippets of everyones online conversationsthe ho pes, the skepticism, the humorfrom people all over the world. It was a truely amazing experience. According to  Mashable, 3,000 people commented on the Facebook CNN feed per minute and millions of people logged into Facebook during the broadcast. The experience reminded me once again of the breathtaking potential of all that is Web 2.0 and the incredible conversations that can occur online to bridge geography, culture, professions, industries, and social standing. The web really is a great equalizer and a great way to build community. And community is what you need to drive a strong career management strategy. Stay connected online and have meaningful conversations about topics you are knowledgeable and passionate about. The web is the 21st century global water cooler, barber shop, coffee shop, and appliance store all rolled into one. Make sure you are not left out of the conversation.

4 Types of Work Friends That Keep You Sane - Cubicle Chic

4 Types of Work Friends That Keep You Sane - Cubicle Chic 4 Types of Work Friends That Keep You Sane Corporate Life, Personal Development June 22, 2018 10 CommentsNo one knows better than Michael Scott about the importance of friendships! Friends joke with one another, right? (Maybe not so much about each other’s financial situation and mother’s health…) What we do know is that humor is the penicillin for all bad situations. It’s especially important for the workplace. Between delivering results, meeting goals, getting along with unpleasant coworkers (or even worse, bosses), we don’t often leave a whole lot of mental energy to check on our sanity. Having the right kind of friends is the quickest way to maintain sanity in the work life. In today’s post, we will talk about the 4 types of friends that help you stay happy and sane at work.Top Jeans: c/o of Dailylook Elite; Handbag: c/o Palla A-Handbag; use “@cubicle_chic” for 15% off.  Top Jeans: c/o of Dailylook Elite; Handbag: c/o Palla A-Handbag; use “@cubicle_chic” for 15% off.4 types of friends that help you st ay happy and sane at work.  The fellow victimWhatever hardship, whoever the villain, when you spend 8 hours a day, 5 days a week at any place, there will be times and people that make you wish you weren’t there. Whether be it a last-minute project lands on your place because no one wanted to touch it, a grumpy co-worker that has no boundary and holds your ears hostage for conversations you do not wish to have, or a sadistic boss that has no respect for your time…these are times when it makes things so much better if someone else is suffering with you. It’s not as much that the other person is also suffering, but that you aren’t alone in dealing with this misfortune. You see, trying to explain what’s going on at work to someone else, such as a significant other, a family member, or a close friend, is like trying to sing a song through humming â€" it takes someone familiar with the issues to get it 100%. If you have a fellow coworker is going through the same exact issues as you are, a comradery automatically forms, and you have an instant alliance. That alone sometimes is the key to reducing perceived pain and difficulty caused by a particular work situation. The sarcastic bitchAlong the same line as having a fellow victim, you need a sarcastic friend who isn’t afraid of being a bitch sometimes (towards your common enemy, not you). I should caveat this by saying that this has to be a sarcastic bitch who has a lot of empathy. This whole dynamic works based on her/his understanding of your situation and willingness (or natural tendency) to bitch at what/who is causing you pain at work. Simply put, this person is an active practitioner of empathy. We all know how venting works and it’s most effective when someone else is not only agreeing but chiming in. It’s also proven in studies that empathy in the workplace makes us happier and more productive. The strategic mentorIf having the first two kinds of friends is how you deal with adverse situations pas sively, the strategic mentor is how you deal with the situations proactively. Once you’ve vented and moved on from the heat of the moment, it’s time to think about how to prevent the situation from occurring again, or how to deal with it better next time. Sure, more likely than not, what is within your power to improve the situation may be minimal, but this is where a strategic mentor comes in. A strategic mentor is, hopefully, someone a bit more seasoned than you are in the workforce, knows you well, has your benefit at heart, and isn’t afraid to tell you the truth. You need this person to analyze the situation for you with as little bias as possible. The best outcome in talking to a strategic mentor about an adverse situation at work is that you come out of it 1) feeling less bitter because you know you’re not at fault, or 2) feeling secure and comfortable in knowing how to prevent the situation again or how you need to improve in order to avoid such an event from happenin g again.Top Jeans: c/o of Dailylook Elite; Handbag: c/o Palla A-Handbag; use “@cubicle_chic” for 15% off.  Top Jeans: c/o of Dailylook Elite; Handbag: c/o Palla A-Handbag; use “@cubicle_chic” for 15% off.  Top Jeans: c/o of Dailylook Elite; Handbag: c/o Palla A-Handbag; use “@cubicle_chic” for 15% off.The cat/dog lover or bearer of good foodThere are a few things in life that put you in instant nirvana. Puppies, kittens, and good food are three of such things. Studies have shown that looking at puppies and kitten actually lowers blood pressure. If you’re a cat lover and you happen to have a coworker who is also a cat lover, the cat talk is so therapeutic on an otherwise busy and stressful workday. The occasional cute puppy/kitten GIFs that come through your email may have the same effects. Similarly, the ambiance of the entire office space can be lifted by a box of baked goods, a plate of lunch to be shared by the group or a bag of freshly harvested lemons from some one’s backyard. Don’t underestimate such little joys in life and the people that make them happen â€" they are increasing the quality of your work life without your conscious awareness.Top Jeans: c/o of Dailylook Elite; Handbag: c/o Palla A-Handbag; use “@cubicle_chic” for 15% off.ConclusionThere you have it. The four kinds of friends at work that will keep you sane and make your work life better. If you already have these four friends, congratulations! Get them a nice token of appreciation when the next holiday comes around. If you don’t have these four friends, it’s time to start paying attention. I suggest trailing the smell of donuts next time you sense them at work. Find out who brought them, and chat up that person! All photography by Natalie Alvarado @ Stylenufse

Its Ok to Quit - Hallie Crawford

It’s Ok to Quit I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten on the phone with a career coaching client and they sound great. And a few seconds later as we’re into the call, they tell me they got laid off or quit. The first few times this happened I was surprised because typically of course, this is not good news. But in some cases, when the job is making them miserable they are more relieved than anything else and actually incredibly happy that the experience is over! This is of course when the client is financially stable and has some way to pay their bills at least for the short term. But even without that cushion honestly, many of them are still happy. So we want you to know that it’s ok to quit. You have permission. My rule of thumb is (one of them) if your job is making you physically ill you need to make a change asap. If you are in an abusive situation in any way or you witness unethical behavior-that’s another good reason of course. But it’s also ok if your current job is preven ting you from moving towards your dream job, because it’s sucking the life out of you. This client story may help you consider your situation further and decide what to do. Of course, don’t do something without thinking it through fully and having a plan. But know that, it’s ok to move on even if it doesn’t seem like the most practical thing to do. You know the saying, when a door closes…. a window opens…. Here it is from Sally in Minnesota. Notice she talks about trying to like the job and fit herself into it. It’s better to find a job that fits rather than force yourself into one that doesn’t. “I finally quit my job in June and have not at all regretted that decision. I tried for so long to like my position there, but it was really just paper-pushing and bureaucracy, and I feel like I have more to give to this world. So for no solid reason, I just left. No job to go to, no graduate school waiting. I just quit. I have spent my summer living up north with some of my favorite people in the world, doing all sorts of relaxing things sewing, reading, cooking, and watching camp fires. This was a much needed pause for me. I am now back in Minneapolis for a few days before I head out to Seattle to spend some time with my best friend. Mostly I just need to really get away and experience another place and EXPLORE. I am just now beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel.” She sees this light at the end of the tunnel in part because she left a job that was weighing her down. If you are this unhappy in your position do something, whether it’s quit or something else. Don’t stay where it doesn’t work for you. Take one action step this week, however small, towards moving on We hope this is helpful to you! The career coaches at HallieCrawford.com.

How to Differentiate Your LinkedIn Profile and Resume - TheJobNetwork

How to Differentiate Your LinkedIn Profile and Resume - TheJobNetworkYou might think when setting up your LinkedIn profile that all you have to do is copy and paste things from your resume. But that would be a mistake. First of all, a resume is a private document sent directly to potential employers. A LinkedIn profile is public. Here are a few other key differences that will help you differentiate and make these two media work for you. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) 1. Keeping It Concise vs. Room for DetailYour resume has mora space constraints than your online profiles, as it should ideally fit on one page. There, you need to use pithy language that describes your accomplishments as concisely and descriptively as possible. In LinkedIn, you have more room. Instead of a one-line description, try making it two or three lines thatreally sing the story of the big picture.2. Tailoring to the Job vs. Casting a Wide NetYour resume should be re formatted and written for each individual job you apply for, tailored exactly to meet those requirements and needs.Your LinkedIn profile is there to establish your wider appeal and brand. Keep your net broad, and show how your unique skills and interests are versatile enough to apply to a wide range of industries and positions. Show yourself to be the flexible superstar you know you are.3. Showing vs. TellingIf a fact is on your resume, people have to take your word for it. But in LinkedIn, you actually have room to add proof. Show, dont tell your, accomplishments for your profile. Put your money where your mouth is. For example, if you claim to be a good writer, include links to a few of your articles.4. Informal vs. FormalIn LinkedIn, avoid the robotic third person language of your resume. Make it a bit more personal. Use a conversational tone dont sacrifice propriety or effective communication, but let your personality shine through. Also remember that a LinkedIn profile can be m uch more broad and general when compared to the focused information you include on your resume.5.Getting a Job vs. Building a NetworkA resume is geared specifically to getting the interview and getting hired. Your LinkedIn profile is much more about building awareness and adding to your network. Stay in the loop. Get connected with others in your industry. Be part of the conversation. You can also have a LinkedIn profile that helps you keep an eye on new opportunities without tipping your boss off that you are looking.6. No Photo vs. PhotoIts no longer standard to include a photo on your resume, as that can be linked to discrimination. Your LinkedIn profile, however, can and should include a profile picture.
